What is gum grafting?
Gum grafting is a surgery where tissue is removed from one part of your body and placed over areas of receding gums. It provides coverage for the tooth and can prevent decay.
Where does the graft tissue come from?
The dental surgeon takes tissue from the roof of your mouth. There are two different procedures to do this.
What is the procedure like?
You are conscious during the procedure. You receive local anesthesia, so there is no pain. You may have some mild discomfort. The surgery takes around an hour and is relatively comfortable.
What should I expect after the gum graft procedure?
You will have gauze and a dressing on your gums. You can remove the gauze after about a half-hour or once the bleeding stops. You will need to carefully clean the surgical area, avoid direct brushing and eat soft, moderate foods until the area heals.
How long is recovery?
Healing takes a couple of weeks. The swelling goes down by then and the graft size stabilizes.
How does gum grafting help receding gums?
The graft protects teeth and their roots. It prevents further recession and reduces tooth decay and exposure damage.
Who performs gum grafting and what is their training?
Gum graft surgery is performed by our dental surgeons who have additional education and training beyond general dentistry.
What is the next step if I think I may need a gum graft?
