A Look at Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is a surgery where tissue is placed over an area where gums have receded, leaving the tooth root exposed. Gum recession is one of the things that happens in advanced periodontitis, or gum disease. The gum graft helps offer more coverage for the tooth and can prevent it from being damaged or decaying.

Your Body Provides the Tissue

The tissue used for a gum graft is an incredibly small amount. Typically, the dental surgeon will take it from the roof of your mouth to cover the recessed gum. You are conscious during the procedure but won't feel any pain as you are given a local anesthetic. The surgery takes about an hour.

Oral Surgeons Train for Gum Grafting

Doing gum graft surgery requires years of additional study and training. Our dental surgeons have the education and experience required to achieve successful results. They also provide friendly, compassionate care throughout the process.

Gum Graft After Care

Those getting gum grafts will likely leave the office with gauze and dressing on their gums. The gauze can be removed after a half hour when the bleeding stops. The dressing may fall off or your dentist may remove it during your check-up. You will need to clean the surgical area without brushing it directly. You will also need to eat soft, even-temperature foods for a few days until your gums heal.

Recovery

You should see everything begin to heal more rapidly after a couple of weeks. You will be more comfortable and swelling will decrease. You can talk to your surgeon about reducing medication. We can share information about gum grafts with you if you think you may need one. An exam will show exactly what is going on in your mouth and our dentist can recommend treatments that will keep your teeth and gums happy and healthy!
